Providing Security At The World Series Of Poker Tournament

Providing Security At The World Series Of Poker Tournament
You know it's poker season in Vegas when the World Series of Poker tournament once again returns to town. While previous events have been held at a variety of Harrah's properties, for the 2005 summer event, the tournament found a new venue at the Rio Hotel & Casino (Las Vegas), a sister property of Harrah's. The tournament started just days ago on June 2, and will continue to offer dramatic "shoot-out" style gambling through July 16.
There's been no bigger time for poker than now, especially as the "world series" has converted from a once-a-year event in downtown Las Vegas to what is now a traveling road show of gambling prowess. And with this 36th annual event, organizers are estimating that there are thousands of competitors in town looking to land their winnings from the $8 million in prize money, plus thousands more spectators wanting to get their eyes on the action. But it's not just the spectators who have their eyes on the scene. Tom Flynn, the director of surveillance for both the Rio and Harrah's Las Vegas, is making sure that an advanced video surveillance monitoring system is picking up the action on the tables and on the casino floor.
The Rio's poker area, which was recently redesigned to handle the tournament, encompasses 60,000 square feet, can accommodate 6,600 players at a time in the main event. With huge buzz on the World Series of Poker's main event, which is expected to draw 4,000-plus players who buy in at $10,000 each, Flynn saw the need for additional video monitoring to make sure the situation was secure. He answered that need with a surveillance station dedicated to monitoring the event.
"We anticipated that the World Series of Poker would draw a tremendous flow of traffic given the recent popularity of poker around the world," said Flynn, who chose to use a surveillance monitoring station designed and built by North American Video for the event. "We conduct a great deal of business with North American Video both here at the Rio and at Harrah’s Las Vegas, and they were gracious enough to offer us a fully configured video surveillance console for use over the tournament’s six-week run."
The console that North American Video loaned to the Rio is packed full of top electronics, including Honeywell products, as well as an array of NAV-brand 17-inch LCD displays for keeping a close eye on the action. And as far as how it's working, Flynn says the system "has been performing great."
According to North American Video, the console is just a temporary placement, and will be installed as a showcase demonstration at their new, under-construction Vegas facility after the 2005 World Series of Poker tournament ends. Besides supplying the Rio with this monitoring station, the company recently worked with the Wynn Las Vegas to create the enterprise wide system for the new landmark casino.

World Series Of Poker Kicks Off At Rio

World Series Of Poker Kicks Off At Rio June 5, 2005
One of the biggest poker tournaments ever kicked off last week. The World Series of Poker will continue through July 15, and most of the action will be held at the Rio Casino-Hotel, the first time it's been held outside of Binion's Horseshoe. (However, the final table of the championship will be played at Binion's.)
Total prize money is projected to be more than $100 million. The public is invited to watch the action in the Rio's new convention pavilion.
TRIPLE PLAY: Three restaurants in the Fashion Show Mall are running concurrent happy hours Mondays through Fridays. Cafe Ba-Ba-Reeba! (Spanish), Maggiano's (Italian) and Ra (sushi) are next door to each other, so you can hit them all between 4 and 7 p.m.
AIRPORT FOOD: McCarran International Airport is undergoing a $15 million renovation to upgrade the food and beverage facilities. Coming within the next few months are Starbucks, Chili's, Sbarro, Gourmet Burrito, Great Steak and Potato Co. and a Wolfgang Puck eatery.
FREE NO MORE: The Ferrari showroom at Wynn Las Vegas now charges $10 to enter and look around.

Democrats To Select 2008 Candidate In World Series Of Poker May 16, 2005
Howard Dean announced today that the Democratic Party will hold a World Series of Poker tournament in Las Vegas to determine their candidate for the 2008 presidential election. Taking place in early 2007, the rules for elimination will be almost identical to those used for the official WSOP in Las Vegas.
"I think this method of selecting a candidate will be effective," said Dean. "We need someone who really knows how to bluff. Who can lie and have people believe it. Look at John Kerry. No one believed his Vietnam stories or that he really had a plan for anything. He was a terrible bluffer and will likely be eliminated on the first day of the tournament."
Only registered Democrats who have held past elective office and are eligible for the presidency will be allowed to participate. When asked about the new plan of the Democrats, President Bush didn't seem concerned. "I'm a great poker player, but I never have to bluff like the Democrats. I always have better cards."

Antonio Esfandiari - The Magician With The Golden Touch

Antonio Esfandiari has it sweet. Not only is he one of the best poker players in the world, being the youngest player to ever pick up a World Poker Tour championship (the 2004 L. A. Poker Classic) and winning a World Series of Poker bracelet ($2000 Pot Limit Hold 'Em Champion in 2004), he is young and has the world at his beck and call.

He travels the world for business as well as pleasure, and his tales can often be found on his website, magicantonio.com. Born in Iran and now calling San Francisco, CA and the United States his home, Antonio has come far in the world of poker. I found out, however, when talking to the man that he has much more in mind, not only for himself and his life but for his poker career as well.

We had a chance to catch up with each other, after playing phone and text message tag for a few days, just before he headed off on another one of his business trips.

World Series of Poker Rules

These are some factors you need to consider if you are interested in playing The World Series of Poker, this are the rules you might want to fallow if you wanna become the next Champion.

Remember some World Series of Poker rules might change, so, before playing; be sure to check with the casino for any revisions to the rules of World Series of Poker.

• You must be over 21 years of age to play in any World Series of Poker Tournament.
• Tournament and satellite seats will be randomly appointed.
• A player who wants to use a mobile phone must step away from the table.
• All cards will be turned face-up once a player is all-in and all action is complete.
• Chip race rule: when it is time to color-up chips they will be raced off with a maximum of one chip going to any player. The chip race will always start in the number one seat. A player cannot be raced out of a tournament. In the event that a player looses the race he will then be given one chip of the smallest denomination still in play.
• Odd chips will go to the highest hand. In flop games, when there are two or more high hands or two or more low hands, the odd chips will go to the left of the button. In stud type games the odd chip will go to the highest card by suit. There will be an exception to this rule if an effort is made in identical hand situations to split the pot as evenly as possible.
• Side Pots: Each side pot will be split as a separate pot. They will not be mixed together before they are split.
• Calling the clock procedures: Once a realistic amount of time has passed and a clock is called for, a player will be given one minute to make a decision. If action has not been taken by the time the minute is over, there will be a ten second countdown. If a player has not acted on his hand by the time the countdown is over the hand will be dead.
• Dead Button: Tournament play will use a dead button.
• Penalties: A penalty may be called upon if a player's depiction of any card with action pending, if a card(s) goes off the table, if soft-play occurs or related incidents take place. Penalties will be invoked in cases of maltreatment, disruptive behavior or similar happenings.
• If a player puts in a raise of 50% or more of the previous bet he will then be required to make a full raise. The raise will be precisely the minimum raise allowed.
• A player must be at the table by the time all players have complete hands in order to have his hand live. Players must be at the table to call in time. In flop games the big blind's hand will be dead if he is not there to act on it before the flop. In stud games the forced low hand will be immediately dead if the player is not there to act on his hand at the time he is required to put money in the pot (the minimum bring-in will be posted and the hand will be killed),
• In limit games, an oversized chip will be constituted to be a call if the player does not declare a raise. In no-limit an oversized chip before the flop is a call, and after the flop an oversized chip by the initial bettor put in the pot will constitute the size of the bet. In pot-limit and no-limit if a player states raise and throws in an oversized chip the raise will then be the maximum amount permissible up to the size of that chip.
• The one-player-to-a-hand rule will be compulsory.
• There will be no foreign chips on the table except for a maximum of one card cap.
• When time has elapsed in a round and a new round is pronounced the new limits apply to the next hand. A hand has begun with the first riffle.
• A player may not miss a hand. If a player announces the aim to rebuy before the first card is dealt, that player is playing behind and is obliged to make the rebuy.
• Players must keep their highest denomination chips in full view at all times.
• Verbal affirmations as to the content of a player's hand are not binding however at management's discretion, any player intentionally miscalling his hand may be penalized.
• A player who intentionally avoids his blind(s) when moving from a broken table will forfeit the blind(s) and or incur a penalty. The money will be put into the next pot and will be considered dead money.
• All chips must be visibly displayed at all times. Players may not have tournament chips in their pockets at any time. A player who has chips in his pocket will forfeit the chips. The forfeited chips will be taken out of play from the tournament.
• Moving players: In flop games players will be moved from the big blind to the worst position.
• In limit events: there will be a limit to raises even when heads-up. The limit will be the house limit. Once the tournament becomes heads-up the rule does not apply.
• In stud type games: if any of the player's two down-cards are showing due to dealer error it will be a misdeal.
• If a dealer kills an unprotected hand the player will have no redress and will not be entitled to his money back. Immunity would be if a player raised and his raise had not been called yet, he would be entitled to receive his raise back.
• Dealers cannot kill a winning hand that was turned face-up and was evidently the winning hand.
• Verbal declarations in turn are obligatory and action out of turn may be binding.
• Floor people are to consider the best interest of the game and fairness as the top priority in the decision-making process. Uncommon circumstances can on occasion dictate that the technical explanation of the rules be ignored in the interest of fairness. The floor person's decision is final.
• Management reserves the right to cancel or amend any event at its sole discretion in the best interest of the casino or its players.
• Players going from a broken table to fill in seats take for granted the rights and responsibilities of the position. They can get the big blind, the small blind, or the button. The only place they cannot get a hand is between the small blind and the button. A player moved to balance tables will take the worst position. A dead button situation may occur.
• Penalties available for use by the TD are verbal warnings, 10,20,30, and 40 minutes away from the table and may be used with discretion. These may be develop up to and including disqualification. A player who is disqualified shall have his chips removed from play.
• Players are obliged to protect the other players in the tournament at all times. Discussing cards discarded or hand possibilities are not allowed.
• A player who exposes his cards during the play may incur a penalty but will not have his hand killed.
• In no-limit or pot-limit, when raising a player must either put the amount of the raise out in one motion or state the raise amount. By stating the word "raise", a player safeguards his right to raise, but the raise must be made in one additional motion unless he states the amount.
• Verbally revealing the contents of your hand or giving an opinion to another player how to play a hand may result in a penalty.
• In no-limit, less than a full raise does not reopen the betting to a player who already has acted.

2004 WSOP Bings Record Numbers

Anybody who doubts that poker has reached a new high in popularity needs only to look at this year’s record number of entrants in the 35th Annual World Series of Poker. Last year 839 players paid (or won entry via satellites) the $10,000 entry fee to take a shot at Poker’s most prestige’s title of World Champion.
This year there was speculation that there would be around 1,200 players entering the final No Limit event of the WSOP. That estimate was totally shattered as the final number turned out to be 2,576 players. Many of whom had won entry via the online poker sites and other satellite tournaments held around the world. The record number of players presented some real problems for the tournament director and the management of Harrah’s, which is running The Horseshoe Casino in downtown Las Vegas.

Having only 120 tables to accommodate 1,200 players some decisions had to be made how to handle the record crowd. It was decided that the first day of play would actually take place over two days with half the field playing each day. Saturday and Sunday each day stated with 1,200 players seated. Since there were 2,576 players it was determined that 176 would be alternates taking the seats of those who busted out during play. The alternates were also divided into the two day field.
At the end of the two first day starts there were 1,091 players left in the tournament to start the official “second day” on Monday. Over half the players had watched their dreams shattered in a single day. Last year’s champion Chris Moneymaker was one of the players eliminated in his first day of play. Several other Pro players found themselves on the rail as well after the first day.
Record Prize Money Five players form this year’s WSOP will be instant millionaires. First place will pay a record 5 million dollars. Second place will pay $3.5 million; third place, $2.5 million; fourth place, $1.5 million; and fifth place, $1 million. Last year Chris Moneymaker received 2.5 million for his tournament win. This is the same amount this year’s third place player will receive. This year’s tournament will also pay 225 places. The 225th player will $10,000 back, the price of the tournament entry fee.
